Fox Lane's Tracy To Play Lacrosse at North Carolina

BEDFORD, N.Y. — When Sammy Jo Tracy began playing lacrosse as a second-grader, the Fox Lane senior wanted to go to the University of Maryland, where her dad was a standout player.

But she changed her mind. Tracy, a five-year varsity player who led Fox Lane to two Section 1 Class B titles and two state final four appearances, ended up choosing the University of North Carolina.

Tracy will join Yorktown graduates Lindsay and Sarah Scott, both sophomores, on the team.

"I thought I was going to be a 'Terp my whole life," Tracy said of Maryland. "My dad was really great during the whole process. He didn't push me to go to Maryland. He told me to do whatever I thought was going to be the right place for me."

Originally, Tracy considered Syracuse, Georgetown, Duke, Virginia, Northwestern, Maryland and North Carolina. She narrowed her choices to Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Northwestern, the 2012 NCAA women's lacrosse champs.

"North Carolina had the whole package," Tracy said. "They have great academics, as well as great academic support. The coaching staff is phenomenal, and they are always in the final four with a chance to win a championship."

Tracy was especially impressed with coach Jenny Levy and assistant coach Phil Barnes.

"Coach Barnes really knew a lot about me that many people would never know unless they watched me," said Tracy, Fox Lane's career leader in goals. "Coach Levy knew me from when I went to lacrosse camp at North Carolina. She also saw me play with my club team."

But when North Carolina next faces Maryland, who will her father root for?

"My dad will only root for North Carolina in girls lacrosse," Tracy said.
