To the Editor:

Marie Scanlan is running for BCSD’s Board of Education on a platform of excellence and accountability. Marie’s passion for education, personal experience with the schools, financial and business expertise and long-standing commitment to the community make her uniquely qualified for our district board.

I have known Marie for almost two decades both professionally and personally. We met years ago working together at IBM Corporate Headquarters in Armonk. There, I knew her to be a highly respected manager, clear thinker, and fair minded professional. An undergraduate of The Wharton School she went on to earn her MBA at Kellogg Graduate School of Management; she worked for many years in financial management at Price Waterhouse and later at Pepsico and IBM.

Marie left the corporate world to focus time on her three girls, all of whom attended BCSD. Knowing Marie I was not surprised that she decided to turn her focus to benefit the community. After years on the BVES PTA, she was a founding member of the Foundation for Bedford Central Schools, a non-profit which has funded school projects for five years. She also served as President of Northern Westchester Hospital Auxiliary and is a member of Bedford Village Chowder and Marching Club.

Marie cares deeply about the future of BCSD and I know she will work to ensure its viability and excellence. At the same time Marie understands that BCSD must adapt to shifts in economics and demographics while remaining true to its core values. Marie has clear, practical ideas on how to maintain fiscal stability without compromising the integrity of curriculum or quality of the teachers and staff. She will bring the financial and management skills that the BCSD needs.
