Dear Editor

I would like to clarify some facts from a letter written by Amy Broghammer entitled Vote Marie Scanlan For Bedford School Board.

My son was among the first Mt. Kisco Elementary School students to participate in the MKES Newbery book club (spelled Newbery after John Newbery, a British author credited with writing books for children when these were a novelty). The Newbery book club was solely created by MKES librarian Susan Polos. Susan Polos was a member of the national 2014 Newbery Committee and created the program at MKES in the 2013-14 school year. She did this single-handedly. For Marie Scanlan to take any credit for the creation of the Newbery book club is absurd. In 2015, two years after it was created, Susan Polos approached Clare Sherwood, a member of the BCSD Foundation about writing a grant to purchase books for the MKES Newbery book club's third year after her grant proposal to the BCSD Foundation for MakerSpace materials for MKES was turned down. After writing another grant to the BCSD Foundation to obtain funding for multiple copies of books, this was approved. All the correspondence went through Clare Sherwood, and Susan Polos had no contact with Marie Scanlan during this process.

BCSD Teachers and staff need to be celebrated when they go above and beyond their job. Susan Polos does this on a regular basis. Looking at the vast number of accomplishments Susan Polos has achieved in her career as a teacher and librarian, I would think her creation of the MKES Newbery book club will be her biggest legacy.

To be clear, I appreciate all the contributions made by the BCSD Foundation. I just felt it important to clarify that Marie Scanlan, a former member of the foundation has had no impact on the creation, implementation and the success of the MKES Newbery book club.
