To the editor:

My name is Pam Harney, and I’m a candidate for the Bedford Central School District Board of Education.

Like so many of you, I have watched with frustration as year after year our district has held our kids’ critical programs like the arts, music, athletics and electives hostage. We have endured cuts to our programs and courses, watched as our academic rankings decline, and watched our home values plummet and stagnate.

Locally our reputation has been tarnished. None of this happened overnight. And none of it was the result of bad luck. Contrary to the narrative that has been propagated by top administrators and our two longest sitting board members, these things took time.

It took years of rubberstamping unbalanced budgets until we no longer had the funds to cover the annual $3-$5 million deficits we were running. It took years to cultivate a culture of silence and lack of transparency on the Board. And finally, it took years for people to take a chance and run for open seats to try to change all this for the better of our kids and our community.

Today we have a real chance to make things better. When you elect me, Michelle Brooks and re-elect Mike Solomon, we will finally break the cycle of silence and inaction on the School Board which will enable us make much needed changes to the status quo to do better for our kids, all of them.

I ask that you vote for me, Michelle Brooks and Mike Solomon on May 17. Leadership for a Change.
