Edmond Abel, 91, Former Norwalk Zoning Board Member

NORWALK, Conn. – Edmond Lawrence Abel of Norwalk, an active volunteer in the city, died Aug. 19 at his home. He was 91.

Abel was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Rochester, N.Y., to Eugene and Sophie Musicus Abel. He grew up in Rochester and graduated from Monroe High School in 1939. He attended the Rochester Business Institute and worked locally in Rochester until the onset of World War II.

He served in the Pacific, working as a high-speed radio operator in New Guinea and the Philippines. Following the war, Abel attended Syracuse University and graduated in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering.

In 1953, he joined Burndy Corporation, where he worked for 30 years, including a two-and-a-half year assignment as sales manager for Burndy Mexico. After his return to Burndy in Norwalk, Abel headed the electro-chemical products department until his retirement in 1983.

Abel was an active member of the Norwalk community, his family said, and he felt strongly about preserving the integrity of Norwalk neighborhoods. He served on the board and as president of the West Norwalk Association.

He was appointed to the planning and zoning commission and the zoning board of appeals in Norwalk. Abel also served as president of the Arts Council of Norwalk. He was involved in the Norwalk Democratic Party, serving as treasurer for the Democratic town and city committee and supporting local candidates in many elections.

Abel also enjoyed his role as justice of the peace. Known for his creative wedding ceremonies, he married hundreds of couples throughout many years. He loved to travel, play tennis, go to the theater and watch classic movies. After his retirement, Abel enrolled in numerous courses at Norwalk Community College.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Harriet; a brother, Irving (Marilyn) Abel, of Lexington, Mass.; three children, Kenneth (Sandra), of New York City, Janet, of West Hartford, Conn., and Andrew, of Trumbull; and four granddaughters.
