While Maloney declared victory Tuesday night, Hayworth refused to concede, saying there were many votes to be counted and that she wanted to wait one more day “to see how the numbers turn out.”
By mid-Wednesday morning, Hayworth was ready to admit defeat.
“The election of 2012 is over, and while the results didn't go our way, nobody could've fought harder or more honorably than our team,” she said in a statement. “I'm so proud of the hundreds of volunteers who spent their days and nights working to protect and promote all that we cherish about our country and our Hudson Valley. I'm honored to have been side by side with all of you and to have served as our representative in the 112th Congress.” Hayworth said she will help Maloney to make “a smooth transition for the sake of our constituents.” Maloney didn’t wait for Hayworth’s concession.
In his victory speech Tuesday night, Maloney said: “My friends, tonight we have completed our course. We’ve done it. We’ve won this race. We’ve declared victory. Tonight, we start putting people first again in the Hudson Valley.”
Maloney, 46, an attorney, lived in Sullivan County for 16 years and now lives in Cold Spring. He and his partner of more than 20 years, Randy Florke, have three children together, Jesus, Daley and Essie. He worked in the Clinton White House as an adviser and was first deputy secretary to former New York governors David Paterson and Eliot Spitzer.
The 18th Congressional District includes parts of Orange, Rockland, Dutchess counties and the Westchester county towns of Somers, North Salem, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, Bedford, Armonk and Chappaqua.
