Bedford GOP Nominates Democrat Gabor For Quaranta Seat

BEDFORD, N.Y.--The Bedford Town Republican Committee filed paperwork with the Westchester County Board of Elections Thursday naming long-time Bedford Village resident Todd Gabor, a Democrat, as its candidate to fill the remaining three years of the term of Town Justice.

According to Republican Committee Vice-Chair and nominating committee member Luke Vander Linden, “We weren’t interested in finding the perfect candidate; we wanted to find the perfect judge. The fact that Todd’s a registered Democrat doesn’t matter to us.”

Gabor has 28 years of experience as a trial attorney and 16 years as a court-appointed arbitrator. This experience in court was one of many deciding factors for the committee, according to Republican Committee Chairman Don Scott.

“Todd has nearly 30 years experience as a trial attorney arguing exactly the kinds of cases that appear before our Town Court,” he said.

Members of the Republican nominating committee said they went to great lengths to select the right person to fill the position, speaking with nearly a dozen potential candidates.

A 1984 Pace Law graduate, Gabor and his wife Shawn have lived in Bedford for 16 years and have two sons who attend Fox Lane Schools. Gabor ran in the Democratic primary for Town Justice in 2009, his first and only previous foray into politics.

A special election will be held November 6 to fill the position made vacant by the untimely death of Justice Kevin Quaranta in July. Quaranta had served as Bedford's Town Justice since 2004 until he passed away unexpectedly at the age of 56.

In August, the Bedford Town Board appointed former Bedford supervisor John R. Dinin  to serve as justice until the end of 2012. The elected justice who will replace Dinin will begin service on January 1, 2013, finishing out Quaranta's unexpired term.

Quaranta's likely opponent in November will be Bedford Village resident David Menken, whom The Bedford Democratic Committee endorsed in August.

Menken works as an attorney in White Plains and currently serves as the chairman of Bedford’s Zoning Board of Appeals as well as president of the Bedford Village Fire Department.
