NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seven children, ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old, were killed early Saturday morning when a fire destroyed their Brooklyn home.

According to several published reporters, the fire, which occurred in the Midwood section of the borough, was caused by a malfunctioning hot plate.

The children's mother and their 14-year-old sister were the only survivors. The seven children, four boys and three girls, were found in a bedroom in the rear of the house, according to NBC New York .

It was New York City's deadliest fire since March 2007, when 10 people, including nine children were killed in the Bronx.
