Bedford Cops Capture Fugitives In Pound Ridge

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. — A New Jersey man was charged as a fugitive from justice when his escape car was stopped on Pound Ridge Road after an overnight pursuit by Bedford and Westchester County Police, according to Bedford Police Lt. Jeff Dickan.

Police used a search warrant at 2:15 a.m. on Saturday to look for two individuals from New Jersey who were suspected to be hiding out in Bedford.  Bedford Police received information about the fugitives from a New Jersey parole office on Thursday.

Greg Canova, 21, of Mahwah, N.J. and an 18-year-old male from Mahwah, N.J. were identified by officers through photographs, police said. The men were believed to be hiding in a relative’s home, which officers received a warrant to search.

The original charges stem from a June 2011 incident in Mahwah, N.J. in which police said three men, including Canova, were arrested on assault and weapons charges after a fight that involved five adults and a minor; a complaint was also filed against the 18-year-old male minor identified.

“You have to do some intel, especially if they’re felons,” Dickan said. “Sometimes it takes a little while because you need to do some background work.”

Roughly 15 Bedford and county police infiltrated the cottage where the men were believed to be staying, setting off flash-grenades as they entered the house, Dickan said.

Police used three tracking dogs to search the area around the house, an outbuilding on a large property at 121 Stone Hill Road, but eventually determined that the men had fled on foot before officers arrived.

Police conducted a felony traffic stop of a 2009 Lexus on Pound Ridge Road near Pound Ridge Nurseries around 7:28 a.m. and found Canova in the passenger seat and the 18-year-old in the trunk, Dickan said.

Canova and the minor were charged as fugitives and sent to Westchester County Jail, where they await extradition to New Jersey.

Canova’s sister, Stephanie E. Canova, 24, was driving the car and was charged with third-degree hindering of prosecution, a misdemeanor, police said. She was released on $500 bail to return to Bedford Town Court on Oct. 4.

The minor was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Dickan said all turned out well “because by Saturday morning they were in jail. It’s nice when things work out the right way.”
