Ardsley Father Hit With Gun in Home Invasion

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – The robbers who invaded an Ardsley home shuttled two younger children upstairs to hide and marched the father and teenage son into the master bedroom to open a safe, smacking them both in the head with a gun when they didn't respond quickly enough.

The group of four or five robbers, wielding two handguns, stole at least $10,000 from the Bramblebrook Road home Monday evening, police said Tuesday.

“It doesn’t look like it was a random act, it looks like these people were targeted, that they knew there was cash in the house and they kind of knew the location of where the safe was,” said Ardsley Chief of Police Emil Califano.

Police said the father and his 15-year-old son were taken into the master bedroom and forced to open a safe.

“They knew there was a safe in the room they asked the son to open up the safe, the son said he didn’t know the combination and he was struck in the back of the head with the hand gun,” Califano said.  “Then the father was asked to open the safe and he was also struck.”

Police said the father, who owns a plumbing and air conditioning business, and his 15-year-old son were duct taped with their hands behind their backs and duct taped over their mouths before the suspects left the house.

The victim’s 8-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter were forced upstairs into bedrooms and told to hide under the covers by the suspects.

While police said they were unsure of the exact amount of cash stolen, they said it was in excess of $10,000.

After the suspects left the home, the 15-year-old son managed to break free from his restraints and call 911 on his cell phone. The father also broke free and searched the house.

“The son still had his cell phone on him and reached in to call 911 and still had some of the duct tape over his mouth so he was kind of gargled when he was on the phone,” said Ardsley detective Ronald Perkins. “He was ting to be quiet because he wasn’t sure if they were still in the house.”

According to police there were four to five suspects including one white male and the rest were identified as black males.  Police said they were all wearing dark hoodies.

Police said the father was taken to Dobbs Ferry Hospital for treatment to a laceration to the side of the head.  He was treated and released.  The 15-year-old son reported pain to the back of the head and the 10-year-old girl had a minor scratch on her neck.  Police said there was also a family friend staying in the basement at the time, but that she was unaware of the invasion as there was not much noise made during the incident.

Califano said while it was not a random act, it was still very uncommon for the area.

“It’s a pretty quiet community, this stuff doesn’t happen often,” Califano said.
