KATONAH, N.Y. -- Michele Turk, founder of A Bloc of Writers, will be offering advice on how to write an impressive college application essay at a free workshop for high school students at Katonah Village Library on Monday from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Turk has worked as a writer and editor for two decades, and she worked as an adjunct writing professor at Quinnipiac University for four years. Her articles have appeared in Business Week, USA Weekend, Parents and U.S. News and World Report magazines, among other publications.

The lecture, "How to Jump Start Your College Admissions Essay" will focus on how to tackle the new Common Application essay prompts and various supplemental essays; select appropriate topics and themes; organize and focus your essay; find your voice and particular style; and avoid common essay mistakes.

“The goal of the college application essay is not simply to impress admission officers but to give them insight into who you really are and what’s important to you,” said Turk. To do that, students need to realize that you can’t complete this task in a couple of hours, a day, or even a week, if you do it properly.

“If you familiarize yourself with the process now and starting thinking about the essay prompts, you’ll have time to prepare and plan the essays, and when it comes time to begin writing your college essays, it will be an easier, less daunting process.”

A Bloc of Writers is a Greenwich, Conn.-based business expanding to northern Westchester and upper Fairfield County. There is a local tutor assigned to work exclusively on college essays with students who reside in this area.  For more information, visit www.ablocofwriters.com.
