'Spring Into Katonah' Celebrates Hamlet's Culture

SOMERS, N.Y. – Katonah residents and their guests were treated to an evening of food, music and chitchat with friends and neighbors at Thursday night’s gathering "Spring Into Katonah: A Celebration of the Senses."

While children played lawn games and soft jazz played on the warm night air, local food and wine merchants provided guests with free samples from such places as the Blue Dolphin Ristorante, The Blue Pig, The Finer Winer, Sweetooth, Peppino’s Ristorante and Wm. Nicholas & Co

Edris Scherer, co-president of the Katonah Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber partnered with the Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial to host the event on its grounds in Somers. "Spring into Katonah" was meant to highlight the Bedford hamlet’s areas of lush, natural beauty as well as its charming business district.

“We wanted to showcase the best parts of the season — the spring and summer,” she said. Scherer said the hamlet’s mature trees help show off the Victorian-era homes and shops to their best advantage.

Many of these structures were among those transferred in 1897 by horse-drawn pallets to their current sites, in order to make way for the Cross River Reservoir. And when they moved, said Scherer, the residents “brought history with them.”

Some of Katonah's store owners have been in business for generations, she said.

“What is so unique is the sense that you have such a wide variety right in town,” Scherer said. “There’s everything you might want, from professionals, to health care to food to entertainment to culture and then, all the wonderful people.”

Katonah resident Carol Genovese, who works as a guide at Lasdon, said she, too, enjoys Katonah’s quaint, small-town feel, and the pleasure of seeing friendly faces everywhere.

”Walking around and going into the shops,” she said, “you don’t really pay attention to the names (of the stores) but more the people that are in there.”

Genovese said her husband grew up in Katonah and rarely goes anywhere without running into someone he knows. “I think that’s why I like it,” she said.

Chamber co-President Jennifer Cook said “Spring into Katonah” also helps the chamber get more involved with its partner organizations, which include Muscoot Farm, the Bedford Audubon Society, the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, the Katonah Museum of Art and the Katonah Village Library, all of which had tables at the event.

Katonah is more than just its businesses, Cook said, with world-class arboretums, museums and music festival venues around every corner.
