Medical Pedicures – The Only Sanitary Solution for Summer Feet

“A lot of people don’t realize the scope of what we do,” said the Wilton native, who is now a New Canaan resident and business owner since her practice, New Canaan Podiatry, opened in April. Photo Credit: New Canaan Podiatry

Summer is in full swing and sandals, flip-flops and open-toe shoes are the norm. While regular trips to the nail salon may be a summer splurge for your toes (and a year-round staple!), you might want to consider another option: a medical pedicure.

You probably know someone that has a bad pedicure story -- nails cut too short and ingrown, cuticles bleeding, even tetanus shots after metal tool blunders.

Dr. Jennifer Tauber, of New Canaan Podiatry , has treated her fair share of salon pedicure mishaps. Chief among them? Ingrown toenails due to their being improperly cut at a salon and infections, warts and fungus likely contracted from unsanitary pedicures.

That’s why New Canaan Podiatry is one of the few medical offices in the area offering medical pedicures. These fully sterile pedicures are done by a certified technician and combine spa-like foot pampering with professional care.

A medical pedicure won’t necessarily seem any different than one found at the corner salon, but it is in so many ways. The chair used, for instance, is not plumbed, so each liner is specific to the client, and there’s no worry of infection from bacteria or fungus lurking in a soak or incorrectly sanitized tools.

“After each client those tools used on the client are immediately soaked in germicide and then autoclaved - eliminating the risk for cross contamination,” said Dr. Tauber. “It's the exact same process that I use on the tools that I use for my patients.”

New Canaan Podiatry also uses Dr.’s Remedy nail polish which has no harsh chemicals so nails don’t dry out.

In addition, the room is private – all attention and focus is on the client. And the doctor is a room away if any issues need be addressed. There are many foot and ankle issues that can often be handled and/or eased in a single visit to a podiatrist. Heel pain, tendonitis, diabetic wound care, sprained ankles, orthotics – all and more are covered at New Canaan Podiatry.

Fungal or dystrophic nails, for instance, can be concealed thanks to a Keryflex treatment at New Canaan Podiatry. The product creates a realistic nail while yours heals underneath. You can follow a treatment up right away with a pedicure and walk out wearing sandals without being embarrassed.

Consider a medical pedicure. Your toes will thank you.
