While Mike Kaplowitz was working with Rob Astorino to represent his constituents in northern Westchester by passing a sound budget this year, Mr. Harkham was storming out of the chamber close on the heels of Mr. Jenkins. Scrooge of the summertime. The fireworks are just a fabulous family event. If attendance is slightly down, the celebration is still by far the single biggest gathering of town residents of the year. It is one of the few times taxpayers get value back for their money. I am disappointed at the attitude. Voters were happy to support the construction of Vista's large firehouse, yet f ire companies all over the state do a great job in much more modest and utilitarian buildings. Lighten up. Last year the Town Board made it clear that the Park and Recreation Department would move to the second floor of Onatru Farm. Not only does it make sense to put the Parks and Rec in the Town's largest park (rather than remaining in an old building with a dilapidated heating system that is practically in Somers), more importantly, it would be a much lower impact use than what was previously there or any of the other ideas being discussed, and much more in keeping with the intent of the gift. As anyone who remembers the controversy over the construction of the Lewisboro Soccer Club's "new" field a decade ago recalls, the Onatru gift requires that the fields around the main house be maintained in their original state as a "museum" of turn-of-the-century farming. The westernmost soccer goal, which was within 400 feet of Elmwood Road caused quite a stir. View Comment

This accomplishment would not have been possible without the difficult decisions made by Charlie Duffy, many made over the hue and cry of town Democratic leaders, including Mr. Parsons, who claimed the sky would fall. With the firm hand of fiscal responsibility, thanks to the Republican majority on the town board. Mr. Duffy's projections for the 2012 budget turned out to be spot on. View Comment

Talk about politics. . . How does the Receiver of Taxes bring in significantly more money than was estimated? The Receiver sends out bills and taxpayers return the money. No one visits the taxpayers and threatens them or harrasses them on the phone. Again, we should thank Mr. Duffy for his conservative estimate of delinquenciy recoveries in the 2012 budget. I guess, knowing the tax and spend proclivities of his opponent, Duffy inherently knew to leave the budget tight in the event he lost.. View Comment

It is good to see that Mr. Ripperger has learned from his prior missteps. In the first instance, giving residents a heads up on what he plans to do. But the biggest source of controversy last time was that he undercut his own argument that striping was essential by exempting Mead Street because of pressure from some of his biggest Democratic political supporters.. This letter, written by a Town Councilman heavily involved in local emergency management and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army reserves, sheds some welcomed light by blowing apart one of the drummed up recent allegations leveled by the Teacher's Union against Dr. Kreutzer. When I think of all of the great teachers in Katonah Lewisboro leading our children in classes that teach philosophy, civics, ethics, history and political science, how embarrassed they must be at the behavior of their Union's leadership. Curious, your view was not shared by the vast majority of his school district,'s students, parents and administrators who spoke his praise when the Katonah Lewisboro school board traveled to Wisconsin for their due diligence. And with the failed recall of Gov. Walker, it appears that a majority of those in Wisconsin understand that for education to survive the unions cannot continue to demand more than struggling families can provide. View Comment

A lot of work on the part of the board's three Republicans went into cutting from 19% down to 6.46%. Even so, this is still too high, Rather than blame others, the supervisor and his finance department should have "shopped" healthcare costs, the biggest nut, or pooled coverage to save money as other towns have done. On the revenue side, why are they not pursuing a cell tower on the Brownell preserve that would bring six-figure income annually to taxpayers? View Comment

Glad to see that in sharp contrast to the 17% increase proposed by the Lewisboro supervisor's tentative budget, this current school board is assessing the realities and leaving all options on the table. One issue, however, may need clarification from statements made in conjunction with plans to rent the district's former offices in South Salem. Even though the Department of Education authorizes"warehousing" old buildings by renting them as an education function, at least one appellate court has required that a use variance be obtained. Any private entity acquiring a school building would be required to comply with the zoning regulations of the district in which the school is located, and these schools are all located in residential zones. Most anything other than a private home or a town use will also require a special use permit or variance. View Comment

One vet is Jacob Gilbert, whose house used to stand on Main Street near Gilbert street housed Major Andre when he was captured with the plans for West Point given to him to deliver by Benedict Arnold. Major Andre wrote George Washington from Jacob's house to try and get him to either turn him back over to the British or put him in front of a firing squad instead of hanging him like a common criJnal. George Washington denied both requests and he was taken to NJ and hanged. . View Comment

TRUTH, it is easy to raise the NIMBY flag, but remember none of the people appearing before the board for the applicant live in the neighborhood or have any other interest than to earn their salaries. Former supervisor Ed Brancati Jr. was right to recommend placing the tower on public land where the revenues would inure to the taxpayers. This is what he did at the Vista firehouse and what his successor, Charlie Duffy did on municipal land next to Town Park. Placing the tower on the Brownell property will have less impact on the neighbors and apparently it is a better location for coverage. In fact, Mr. Duffy faced significant issues because of the proximity to the Town Park and had to get special State legislation passed. Any existing easements at Brownell can be altered, especially with these compelling circumstances. If a City can condemn homes for a shopping center in New London, Connecticut, a municipality should be able to revise an easement an that quite possibly gave the donor a significant tax windfall, and build a cell tower on its own land. Supervisor Parsons should take a page from his predecessors, it is worth the effort View Comment

The die was cast for this when the Nordgren Admiistration knowingly accepted the lowest bidder, one that did not post a bond, and had numerous pending lawsuits against it at the time. Despite the many warnings not to accept the bid, he and his land trust cronies were squirreling away every dollar they could to buy the garbage-strewn Levy Preserve property. Both the subsequent Republican and Democratic administrations should be praised for rescuing the project after all the mistakes that were made, and in the end delivering a great facility enjoyed by all. Sean Patrick Maloney's candidacy represents a continuing assault on northern Westchester taxpayers. Unlike the local candidate he beat in the primary, Dr. Becker, who had a long record of community involvement, Mr. Maloney has no local ties and is beholding to the big-city Democrats who are the cynosures of overspending in both Washington and Albany. Our local State Assembly race shows the same disturbing pattern. Assemblyman Bob Castelli, an independent-thnkng fiscal conservative had to defeat a tax and spend White Plains politician in the general election in 2010 and is running against another White Plains Democratic machine-politician again. President Obama and Sheldon Silver have enough minions doing the bidding, local taxayers need some of their own. View Comment
