BEDFORD, N.Y. Fox Lane varsity softball coach Anthony Rodrigues was giddy with enthusiasm when he first welcomed the Class of 2012.
Rodrigues was excited because the girls were a talented, versatile group who lived to play softball. This current crop of girls, teamed with the upperclassmen the next few years and made Fox Lane a contender for a league title and helped the Foxes earn three consecutive sectional appearances.
This is a great senior class, one which I have enjoyed as much as any team I have coached, said Rodrigues, in his ninth year.
Seniors Natalie Beyer, Brittany Ciullo, Jenna DAdamo, Jackie Gigante, Alison Lombardi and Isabella Rago highlight the team. DAdamo, Lombardi and Rago were selected all-league last year as the Foxes finished 14-6 and earned a sectional berth.
Fox Lane opened the 2012 season with three consecutive wins over Pleasantville, Briarcliff and Mount Vernon.
Catcher Christy Lombardi, an all-section pick last year, is one of three junior returnees, including Olivia Azarek and Zoe Vandervelden. Rodrigues welcomes three newcomers Erin Van Zandt, Kim Manjuck and eighth-grader Alexis Bazo.
One of Fox Lanes strengths will once again be its pitching, with Alison Lombardi in the circle. Bazo will be the No. 2 wind miller. The defense, especially up the middle, will aid Lombardi. Rago is at shortstop, Beyer at second base, DAdamo is playing the hot corner and Van Zandt is the first baseman. Christy Lombardi, behind the plate, has a strong arm and works well with her sister. The outfield consists of Ciullo, Gigante and Azarek.
We hope to have another strong season, by contending for the league title and advancing in the Section 1 tournament.
