Pace To Christen Field, Kick Off Football Season By Honoring Past Coaches

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.-- On Saturday, Sep. 5, the Pace University Football team will host Ave Maria University in its first game of the 2015 season at the new Pace Stadium on the Pleasantville Campus.

Prior to the noon kick-off, the athletics department will celebrate the lives of Hall of Fame coaches George Maier and Fred Calaicone, who passed away over the last year. Maier was the Head Football Coach at Pace from 1973-1988, leading the transition from club status to varsity in 1978. He finished his career with a 79-59-4 overall record, with 52 wins coming during the varsity era of the program.  Under Coach Maier's leadership, 45 individual records were set while 25 single season records are held by teams that he guided. Maier was inducted into the Pace Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Calaicone guided the Pace Baseball team as the Head Coach from 1981-2000.During his time, he became the first Setters coach to eclipse the 300 win plateau. Calaicone retired as head coach after the 2000 season, finishing his head coaching career with a record of 397-389. During his tenure at Pace, Coach Calaicone took the program from Division II to the Division I level, which helped lead to the construction of the baseball field on the Pleasantville campus. Calaicone was inducted in the Pace Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 and his 1985 Baseball Team was the Team of Distinction recipient at the 2015 Hall of Fame ceremony this past spring.
