John Jay Pulls Away From Fox Lane, 28-14

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. -- The fierce high school football rivalry between Fox Lane and John Jay was renewed Friday night and host John Jay pulled away for a 28-14 win.

John Jay (5-1) won its fifth straight. It was Fox Lane's sixth straight loss.

The third quarter is when John Jay separated itself from the Foxes, using defense to help its cause.

Senior Daniel Ryjov of John Jay blocked a T.J Hallock punt  n Foxes territory, giving the Indians great field position.

Find it they did, as running back Danny Caiola scored from a few yards out with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter to give John Jay a 21-7 lead.

The first half was tightly played, as John Jay went into halftime with a 14-7 lead. The first drive went an impressive 99 yards for the Indians, highlighted by the 77-yard run by Caiola. The finishing touch was given by the tandem of quarterback Tyler Keech and receiver Thomas Weingarten, giving the Indians a 7-0 lead with 6:43 left in the first quarter.

The Foxes returned the favor, using a sparkling defensive play to help them get on the board. Defensive end Nick De La Pava intercepted a short pass in Indian territory near the line of scrimmage. Hallock, the Foxes' quarterback, then connected with two-way star Kevin Muller on a short slant pass, allowing Muller to split the defense and cross the goal line to tie the game.

Before the end of the first half, one of the two Indian quarterbacks, Jack Lambert, scored from 10 yards out, keeping the snap himself and scurried his way through a barrage of Foxes. That led to the 14-7 halftime score.

John Jay looks to wrap up a high seed for the upcoming sectionals when it ends the regular season at Roosevelt on Oct. 22, the same day Fox Lane faces Carmel.
