The Harvey girls varsity rugby team made history as the Lady Cavaliers played their first league match against New York Rugby Club High School Program at Randall's Island Park in Manhattan on Saturday, May 10.
An early morning kickoff to Harvey began an exciting and lively game of rugby. New York's girls took advantage of dropped balls and quickly used the space along the touch line to score the first try of the game. Chappaqua’s Ava Gurman answered New York's try with a kick that went deep into New York’s territory.
The next Harvey kickoff led to some technical errors by New York. Harvey gained possession and Gurman made a hard run through New York's defense managing to ground the ball between the posts. The drop-kick conversion went through.
Despite the effort by the Harvey girls, New York's combined experience and knowledge reflected in the 93-7 score.
“Although some might think we had a low score, keep in mind that this was the first full game of the first season of the girls program,” said coach Ciara Lehane. "With Harvey wining the majority of its scrums, the talent, heart and determination are readily apparent on the team.”
The boys rugby team earned two wins when the Cavaliers defeated visiting Wilbraham and Monson Academy, 40-21 Saturday, May 10.
