The worst of times came in the first half as Stamford Academy opened the game on a quick 15-4 run. After a timeout, the Cavaliers regrouped and made a big run of their own, tying the game up at 15. But Stamford broke the tie and went on a tear, outscoring Harvey 16-2 and building a commanding 31-17 lead at intermission.
The second half saw Harvey try to claw its way back as the Cavaliers actually outscored Stamford by four points, but it was not enough to come back from the 14-point first half deficit.
Harvey senior guard Ricky Hicks once again led the Cavaliers in scoring with 19 points. No other Harvey player reached double figures in scoring. Deshawn Hilliard grabbed 10 rebounds.
For Stamford Academy, Shy Diggs was all over the court, leading the team in both scoring and rebounding. He finished the game with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
Harvey coach Dom Narcisco said his team worked hard on defense, but could not do much to stop Diggs.
“We’ll have to review the videotapes this weekend in order to work on correcting our mistakes,” Narcisco said. Harvey’s next game is an important early season league matchup at South Kent (Conn.) on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
“We’re excited for this early season challenge,” said Narcisco, “but we know we must work on our boxing out and efficiency of offensive plays.”
The Cavaliers are 1-1 after the first week of the winter season.
