BEDFORD, N.Y.-- The beginning of school means a new fall season of sports is set to begin at Fox Lane High School.
The girls cross country team is coached by Steven Petrillo. Petrillo has high hopes for this season, having only lost two players to graduation and watching the team double in size.
"We look to continue the success we experienced last year," Petrillo said.
Vicky Martinez, a sophomore, is the team's top running returning runner, finishing 7th place in Section 1, and 2nd in the county meets.
Paige Cloonan, a co-captain, finished 19th in the county meets and 13th in the sectional meets.
"She has had a great summer of running and she's determined to have her final cross country season be her best yet," Petrillo said.
Petrillo also highlighted senior co-captain Claudia Krasnow, junior Daniela DiCapua and sophomore Senoah Kim as athletes to watch. The team also added three transfers, junior Kerry Schwartz, sophomores Julia McEleny and Alison Moky.
"Our goal is to finish the same as last year," Petrillo said. "We are looking to finish strong in our league, in Westchester and in Section 1."
Petrillo said the team's strategy will change, relying on depth and less on front runners.
"We also are looking forward to being competitive with complete Varsity, JV, and freshman teams for the for first time in a while," Petrillo said.
JR Pouncey is entering his sixth season as coach of Fox Lane's varsity boys soccer team, coming off a disappointing 2-13 season.
Despite the losing campaign, Fox Lane had two 2012 All League Selections, junior Owen Azrak and senior Andrew Harrison.
Pouncey said his team will run a 4-2-3-1 formation and his goal is to make the playoffs.
"Our top finisher up top is Sebastian Osorio and our top playmaker in the midfield is Isaac Sanabria," Pouncey said. "Anthony Giron is our defensive stalwart.
The large number of returning sophomores and juniors give Pouncey a reason for optimism entering 2013.
"We are looking for a stronger season," Pouncey said.
