Fass, Telep Volunteer at Home Westchester CC

RYE, N.Y. -- Peter Telep is two weeks removed from hip replacement surgery, but the Stamford resident and Westchester Country Club member was out on the 18th green with fellow marshal Peter Fass Thursday volunteering during the first round of the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship.

Fred Couples had just left the 18th with his 3-under par 68 when Fass and Telep, who have played the old course for decades and know its demand for accuracy, waited for the next threesome to arrive at the final hole.

“It’s been three weeks since my surgery, so I hope to be out playing by October 1, they do great things now with these things,” said Telep, a Stamford resident, pointing to his hip. “The course here is challenging for sure. There are only two players under par right now – Couples at 3-under is a good score.”

The Harrison faculty members joined more than 700 other volunteers who will work the tournament this week. The Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship is the fifth and final event of the 2011 Seniors Tour major event season and is being hosted at Westchester Country Club for the first time with such PGA greats as Watson, Ben Crenshaw, Couples and defending champion Mark O’Meara competing.

Fass, who has been a club member since 1981, said the course demands that players make a variety of shots from a variety of placements.

“It’s a position course,” said Fass, formerly of Bedford Hills and now a Florida resident. “When Walter Travis designed the course, he wanted the players to use every club in the bag, not just a driver and wedge.”

As for the layout of their “old friend”, Telep says the course has undergone many changes.

“The course has been lengthened and they’ve put different traps in,” Telep said. “Last year they put in news greens. They are now bent grass greens which take about two years to get the set. The greens are pretty good, but they are relatively slow.”

Individual daily and weekly tickets to the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship are now on sale. Those wishing to purchase tickets to the Championship may do so by logging on to the official tournament website, www.ceseniorplayers.com, or by calling the championship office at 914-481-5900.
