BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Eleven Bedford Turkey Trots have been held since the 5K road race's inception in 2005, with the most recent having taken place on Saturday morning. Of those eleven races, three were won by Philip Cawkwell, who just earned his latest victory.
Cawkwell, who lives in the Bedford area, finished first overall at 17 minutes and 11 seconds. The three Turkey Trot wins were earned non-consecutively.
“It feels great,” Cawkwell said about his adding a third win.
Cawkwell ran cross country while he was a student at Byram Hills High School. He continued as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania and continues to stay in shape.
“I run almost every day."
This year was different for Cawkwell, who referred to his latest victory as probably “my hardest win of the three," citing his relatively lesser state of shape in comparison to previous years.
The race also included victories by category. Cawkwell, by finishing in first overall, also came in first for the men's category. Holly Rees, of Somerville, Mass., finished in first for women, with a time of 18 minutes and 50 seconds.
The Turkey Trot began by Bedford Village Elementary School before heading by Court Street to Seminary Road. The race finished at Bedford Village Memorial Park, where prizes were handed out to top finishers.
Several local sponsors were present, including the Bedford Village Chowder & Marching Club, Rippowam Cisqua School and Mount Kisco Sports.
