“Poetry is a pretty cool thing,” the former teacher told students. “I started changing up nursery rhymes when I was in kindergarten, like, ‘Rain, rain go away; we had recess in today.’”
Scheu encouraged the students to write a poem every day, explaining how poetry can improve one’s overall writing skills by requiring the writer to choose his or her words very carefully.
“It’s all about changing words in your head and on paper,” he said. “Don’t tell your teachers, but sometimes you don’t even need capital letters.” Scheu visited classrooms to assist students with their poetry and shared some of his own poems, which incorporated funny rhymes and interesting stories. In addition, students helped Scheu write an original poem about spring using nouns and verbs that describe the season.
