Pace President Salutes Graduates For 'Amazing Transformation'

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- Pace University President Stephen Friedman saluted the university's most recent class of undergraduates for completing "an amazing transformation into young men and women fully ready to step out into the wider world" at commencement ceremonies held Tuesday morning on the Pleasantville campus.

"Unpredictability will be a larger part of your life than it has been at Pace," Friedman said. "There is no core curriculum in life. There’s no plan telling you what to do when you return from winter break, and indeed, there won’t even be a winter break."

Among other highlights of Friedman's address:

* On following your passion: "Love business more than you love the idea of becoming a senior vice president, love acting more than you love the idea of winning an Oscar and love systems design more than you love the idea of being the new Bill Gates. If you love the journey more than the goal, the goal will take care of itself.

"On your journey always have faith in yourself and your abilities even if you experience setbacks. But always remember that you are never as good as you think you are when you succeed, and never as bad as you think you are when you fail.

* On overcoming setbacks: "When you fail don’t let it destroy your confidence. Failure is just a way of pushing you to learn important lessons and to recognize that that there are always other options.

"No matter how many times you succeed or fail, please remain true to the values that led you to Pace and helped you excel here. Among the most important of those values is a commitment to service to others."

* On starting a new journey: "Today Pace shares you with the world; just as your family once shared you with Pace. Tomorrow is the first day of your journey to the rest of your life. It will be a journey unlike any that you’ve taken thus far. Go forward with confidence."
