LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- Katonah-Lewisboro's John Jay Middle School hosted the Wonder Book Talk Cafe for approximately 60 students, parents, teachers, educational staff and community members in the school library on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Wonder was the feature book for the 2013 JJMS Community Read, which took place between June and October. It tells the fictional story of what happens when August Pullman, a 10-year-old boy born with severe cranio-facial abnormalities, goes to middle school for the first time after having been home-schooled.

The book talk cafe began with a dramatized student reading from the pages of Wonder in order to remind and refresh participants about the main characters and happenings in the book. The half-hour show featured a volunteer cast of twelve JJMS students representing all grades, as well as a special guest appearance by JJMS Principal Rich Leprine.

Break-out discussion groups facilitated by parents, teachers, educational staff, and community members then followed.

The event ended with closing remarks by the PTO Co-Presidents Wendy Slater and Linda Lederman, who also distributed the door prizes and laminated posters of “precepts,” or guiding principals embraced by characters, from Wonder: "Kind words to not cost much; yet they accomplish much."
