Marie Scanlan is one who sees an obstacle and artfully clears it –which is why there is no one better suited to join our Board of Education. When budget cuts were made due to the funding deficit caused by previously poor financial management and lack of transparency by past boards, she worked to restore items critical to academic excellence by co-founding the Foundation for Bedford Central Schools. For five years as Chair, she kept it true to its mission of supporting student’s learning to their full potential across all of our community schools, like creating a Newberry Book Club at Mt. Kisco Elementary and the purchase of 3D printers for pre-engineering at FLMS. Marie understands that providing professional development is crucial to the success of our children and is raising funds to support our teachers when budget cuts curtail the investment in our teachers.
This year Superintendent Dr. Manno and our board of education delivered the first annual budget that showed line-by-line details, something her opponent with the longest tenure on the BOE was not able to fulfill during his 4+ years on the dais. For the first time since my children have been in the district, I am feeling enthusiastic about our leadership and direction. However, we can and must do better for our kids and community. In these challenging times, we need someone who can make difficult decisions in a collaborative, constructive, and creative manner.
Marie’s various professional and volunteer experience demonstrate accountability. Just like me, she longs for the days when nary a Board of Education member will announce “Nothing to report” for their subcommittees. I am confident she has the passion, intellect, financial experience and mettle to clear any hurdle our district faces. She enthusiastically has my vote on May 16th and I urge everyone in the district to join me.
