The program, available to students throughout the world, allows students to observe the moon and identify patterns in its appearance then write and submit short essays based on observations. The purpose of the program is to enable students to observe nature firsthand while sharing in a global collaboration.
The acronym MOON stands for “More Observation Of Nature.”
Students studied the moon’s position at various times during the months of September through December. After noting the direction of the moon during different phases and measuring its angles, they graphed and illustrated this information on monthly calendars.
In essay form, the observations were sent to the online scientists. After reading the essays of students in various parts of the world, the John Jay students submitted second essays discussing observed patterns. In their third essays, they each selected a pattern and proved its authenticity by creating a chart with an accompanying explanation.
