They presented their award-winning poster, entitled "New Reactions of dipp-BIAN with Vanadium-Containing Compounds." The siblings are students of science faculty member Colin Abernethy. This was the third consecutive year Sarah Lawrence students received awards at this Symposium.
“For the past few years, we have aimed to synthesize compounds with terminal transition metal nitrides. These complexes have great potential as starting materials for use in catalytic reactions,” said the Nadelmans in a statement of their poster’s content. “Much of our research has centered [on] stabilizing vanadium in early oxidation states. The products of our work include the first known examples of vanadium stabilized by the dipp-BIAN ligand, as well as the first-ever vanadium-zinc and vanadium-magnesium complexes.”
The Nadelmans are studying classics and foreign languages in addition to the sciences. When asked to describe their experience at Sarah Lawrence, they added in the statement that “…we are happy to be able to pursue the many interests we have in common…We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to study high-level chemistry and conduct new and exciting research with our professor. We never expected to be given this privilege during our undergraduate studies.”
