Jones was awarded the opportunity to join a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation. To supplement her future studies in the field, Jones will receive one college credit upon successful completion of the week's educational workshop.
Jones was chosen by one of her teachers on the environmental science staff at Fox Lane High School. Her selection was based on her academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies.
George Mason University has partnered with National Geographic and the National Zoo to host the nation's youth scholars on its Washington, D.C. campus for the conference, which features special events at the Smithsonian National Zoo, National Geographic, and the U.S. Capitol.
Students will also hear from distinguished faculty and guest speakers that include prominent environmental researchers, directors of prestigious institutions and recent college graduates already successful in the field.
The summit this June has been designed to encourage and inspire young student leaders to further pursue their interests in careers in environmental science and conservation.
