Fox Lane Players Ready to Sing The Nights Away

BEDFORD, N.Y. — The Fox Lane Players are known throughout the area as a student troupe worth seeing, and they will be bringing to the stage a modern cult classic that is sure to get the audience dancing in the aisles. 

“The Wedding Singer,” the 1998 comedic love story between a singer and a waitress, will be hitting Fox Lane High School’s Mary Lou Meese stage on March 16, 17, and 18, and the preparation is proving to be a blast for those involved. 

The Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore film that captured 80s nostalgia has infected the interests of the cast. 

“This is the one that’s up their alley. It’s their kind of music, it’s the ‘girl and boy finding each other’ story, and it speaks well to high schoolers,” said Ed Steele, the director of theater at the school. “They love it. I expect something that rocks the house.”

Musical Director Sarah Fay has been in the Bedford Central School district for nearly 25 years, and is used to directing the classic theater tales onstage. But once she got her hands on the script and did “a little editing,” the story was just right for the players.  

“There’s a lot of energy, it’s just a very sweet love story. There’s a lot of comedic elements, and it’s a great change for me from the usual choral repertoire and classical material we do in school,” Fay said. “But it really appeals to them, and they’re doing a great.” 

Fox Lane junior Eric Simon is a member of the Fox Lane Players and will be playing the role of Glenn, the main antagonist in the love story.

“I’m so excited. It’s the first time we’ve done anything in this time period before,” Simon said. “We have cool things like a DeLorean backstage, and we’re having a lot of fun.” 

The cast is coming together over the script, Simon noted, as the dancing scenes, along with the 1980s music, is giving the players added momentum to make the production great. 

“The cast has bonded very well around the show, we’re all having a ton of fun. (Thursday’s) rehearsal wasn’t scheduled,” Simon said, “we just came together to rehearse because we love it and we’re trying to make sure the show is the best it can be.”
