AFS-USA is an international high school student exchange group. Schools recognized for the award have partnered with the organization to promote global citizenship through intercultural learning inside and outside of the classroom, representatives said.
"These schools are committed to preparing our youth to engage in an increasingly interconnected global economy," representatives said. "From hosting international students, sending students abroad to working with the organization to incorporate intercultural learning in the curriculum, these educators demonstrate the importance of fostering global competency in their students."
The group selected 79 high schools from around the country as "making a profound difference in the lives of students and in society at large," according to a release.
Fox Lane High School hosts AFS students and has sent 19 students abroad to 12 countries. The school also has an AFS Club that has provided scholarships for students to study abroad and hosted numerous orientations for the local AFS E-Z Pass Area Team, according to the release.
“We’re so thankful and proud to work in educational partnership with schools like Fox Lane High School,” said Tonya Muro, the director of School Outreach and Educational Partnerships at AFS-USA. “These educators are at the forefront of bringing global awareness and intercultural experiences to their students. In doing so, they are providing students, teachers and the greater community profound opportunities to broaden their knowledge of other cultures and peoples, which is indispensable in this day and age.”
