The vehicle, which had heavy front-end damage, was swerving with its lights off when Officer Mark Torsiello stopped it on Route 17 before dawn Friday, Detective Joseph Rutigliano told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The driver — identified as 27-year-old Jose Quintero — “began shouting obscenities at the officer,” he said.

Torsiello “detected a odor of marijuana and alcoholic beverage,” then took Quintero into custody after finding a glass pipe with marijuana residue in the car, Rutigliano said.

Lyndhurst police then responded to a radio transmission about the car and its damage, confirming a hit and run, the detective said.

Quintero was charged in Wood-Ridge with DWI, reckless driving, having no insurance, failing to maintain headlights and possession of drug paraphernalia. Lyndhurst police charged him with leaving the scene of an accident, among other offenses.
