Roberto Morales-Rivera, of 160 St. Stephens Road, smashed the window of a 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor in the parking lot of Planet Fitness in Fairfield, police said. He found the keys to the car in a pocketbook, which was inside the car, police said.
Police said Morales-Rivera then drove out of the parking lot in the car, but the car's owners followed him to the P.T. Barnum housing complex in Bridgeport and called police.
Morales-Rivera was apprehended after running from officers, police said. He was arrested and charged with third-degree larceny and second-degree criminal trover, police said.
He was held on $10,000 bond. His court date is July 15, police said.
