Several areas had already reported flooding from the storm, including the Bridge Street parking lot in Irvington. Village officials warned residents not to venture near the waterfront.
“There are countless underground utilities in this area including sewer, gas and electric (the salt water of the Hudson acts as a very good conductor of electricity)!” an update on the village's Facebook page said.
Irvington police planned to block off access to the west side of the Metro North railroad tracks on Monday. The Tarrytown Daily Voice readers noted the storm surges were already worse than previous storms.
“That was about the maximum height we had during Irene,” Barbara DeAngelis wrote about pictures of the parking lot flooding. “And the main storm isn't even here yet. Wow.”
Dobbs Ferry and Sleepy Hollow police had also blocked off access to waterfront areas on Monday morning. High tide is estimated to take place between 10:30 and 11:30 p.m.
Tarrytown village officials canceled garbage collection for Monday and Tuesday as Hurricane Sandy approached and urged residents to remove lawn furniture and decorations because they could become projectiles during the storm.
Tarrytown will open a shelter at the Main Street firehouse if necessary. Village officials said pets would be welcome at the shelter and residents should bring food with them.
Irvington and Sleepy Hollow both declared states of emergency on Monday. New York State Thruway officials reduced speeds on the Tappan Zee Bridge and warned of possible closures.
