EASTON, Conn. Sanford Cooper, 64, whose house at 507 Judd Road burned down in May as fireworks in the garage detonated, turned himself in to Easton police Tuesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest, police reported.
Cooper was charged with reckless endangerment second degree, illegal possession of fireworks and illegal possession of explosives.
The police reported they arrived at the fire May 17 to find the front portion of the house in flames. As fire personnel began fighting the fire, they learned fireworks were stored in the basement. Removing the fireworks was unsuccessful due to the rapid spread of the fire and as the fire reached the garage the fireworks began to detonate.
A joint investigation conducted by the Easton Police Department, Easton Fire Marshall, Office of the State Fire Marshall and Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad resulted in an arrest warrant being filed for Cooper.
Cooper was released on a written promise to appear in court Oct. 2.
