The legislation was approved by the State Senate, but still must be voted on by the assembly.

Cuomo said the idea first came from outgoing Assemblyman Denny Farrell while they were telling stories.

"Denny said, 'we should think about naming the bridge after your father,'" Cuomo said. "My father doesn't have anything named after him. I thought it was a good idea."

Cuomo said critics should put aside the "baloney" politics.

"He was a great public official," Cuomo said of his father. "The bill passed in the senate unanimously. I thought it was a beautiful gesture."

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, who challenged Governor Cuomo in 2014 and is considering running again in 2018, ripped the move, calling it "outrageous."

"Mario Cuomo has no connection whatsoever to Westchester or Rockland," Astorino said.

Astorino said it would be more appropriate to name something in Queens after Cuomo, where he lived and raised his family.
