“In light of the serious charges made against the Speaker and his refusal to provide any substantive response to those charges, I believe it would be in the best interest of the people of New York for Speaker Silver to step down from his leadership position in the State Assembly," Buchwald said in his statement. "It is imperative that we immediately restore public confidence in this institution. Maintaining public ethics in government is a principle that we should never compromise, and I am confident that the citizens of Westchester County and New York State agree.”

Assembly Democrats held a five-hour, closed-door meeting on Monday and determined that Silver can not remain in power while he faces up to five counts of corruption and fraud, according to nystateofpolitics.com.

Should Silver step down, Majority Leader Joe Morelle would take over. Silver has held the position since 1994, nystateofpoliltics.com said.
