BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. A house sitter and dog walker hired to work at a McLain Street home in August has been charged with stealing $40,000 worth of jewelry while the owners were away, according to Bedford Police.
Claire M. OSullivan, 39, of Buchanan, was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree grand larceny and fourth-degree grand larceny, both felonies. Police recovered about $7,500 worth of the jewelry, which O'Sullivan is accused of pawning.
Bedford Police Lt. Jeff Dickan said he considers the recovery effort to be very successful because jewelry tends to disappear quickly when it is pawned. He said police will continue to try to locate the rest of the items.
The homeowners reported the jewelry missing on Sept. 3. At the time they told police they suspected O'Sullivan was the culprit.
She was sent to Westchester County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash bail or $3,000 bond and is due back in Bedford Town Court on Thursday, Sept. 27.
