BEDFORD, N.Y. — A man from Flushing, Queens, was discovered with an unregistered loaded handgun and a bulletproof vest Friday when stopped for speeding as he drove through Bedford on Interstate 684, according to the New York State Police in Somers.
At 12:45 p.m., a state trooper stopped Frederick Humphrey, 25, as he was driving a 2007 Mercedes Benz north at a speed of 93 mph in a 65 mph zone, according to police.
An investigation found that the car's registration was suspended, police said, so the vehicle was impounded. At that time, an unregistered loaded .380-caliber handgun was found, police said.
Upon this discovery, the officer arrested Humphrey and discovered that Humphrey was wearing a bulletproof vest, police said.
Humphrey and the owner of the vehicle, who was not arrested, were transported to the State Police Barracks in Somers, police said. There, Humphrey was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful wearing of a body vest, both felonies, as well as vehicle and traffic charges.
Humphrey was remanded to the Westchester County Jail and was scheduled to appear in court at a future date.
