When Somers firefighters arrived at 3:12 p.m. the house was fully involved in flames, Somers Second Assistant Fire Chief Jody Leverich said. The house is on the Somers-Katonah border with a Katonah address. Fire crews from Somers, Katonah and Yorktown Heights battled the blaze.
Fire officials did not know how the fire started. All that remained of what they believed was a two-story residence was charred wood.
No one was in the house when the fire started. Firefighters believe it burned to the ground in part because the location was so remote and far from the road. It was a while before neighbors saw smoke and called the fire department, officials said. There are three houses on the property.
Most of the heavy fire was knocked down a little after 4 p.m.
The temperature was about 20 degrees with 15 mph winds gusting to 25 mph on Tuesday afternoon.
The Westchester County Arson Task Force was on the scene along with officers from the Somers Police Department and state troopers.
