The incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m. at the maximum-security facility in Westchester County.

The inmate, Andre Terry, had just returned to his cell following a disciplinary hearing, officials said. When he approached the cell, an officer was inside gathering the inmate’s personal items, officials said. The officer placed the items on the cell bed and stepped out of the cell to get a bag in which to put the items, and when he did that, the inmate allegedly entered the cell without permission, officials said.

The officer ordered Terry to exit the cell, officials said. Ignoring the order, Terry allegedly reached out of the cell door entrance, grabbed the officer around the head and neck with both arms and applied a choke hold to the officer, officials said.

Once other officers subdued Terry, he was removed from the cell and placed in a special housing unit, officials said. The officer was taken to the facility medical clinic and transferred to Phelps Hospital for treatment, officials said. He sustained injuries to his left and right ribs, neck pain and abrasions to his right hand, officials said.

Terry is serving a 17- to 20-year sentence after being convicted in Onondaga County in 2003 for second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

"Even when performing routine duties, officers are subjected to conditions that can be, or are, dangerous to their health and safety," Clarence Fisher, southern region vice president of the New York State Corrections Officers and Police Benevolent Association said in a statement. "This attack on one of our members last week is indicative of the rise in violence inside our state prisons over the past several years. We are very fortunate that the officer did not sustain more serious injuries in this assault."
