SOMERS, N.Y. -- An assistant chief's vehicle belonging to the Somers Fire Department was destroyed by fire on Thursday evening, said Ken Hoffarth, a manager for the department's fire district.

The vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Suburban, was being serviced in a maintenance room in the back of the firehouse off of Route 139, across the street from Somers High School, Hoffarth said. The department's other firehouse is located in downtown Somers, near the intersection of Route 100 and Route 202.

The fire department responded at about 7:05 p.m., Hoffarth said. Mutual aid was provided on the scene by Katonah, Bedford Hills and Yorktown Heights, with Croton Falls on standby, a fire official said. This was due to the extent of the blaze being unknown at first.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, said Hoffarth, who added that the firehouse sustained smoke damage, which is being cleaned up.
