Bedford Police: Woman's iPad Stolen From Car

BEDFORD, N.Y.— A woman's $500 iPad was stolen from her unlocked car July 23 while she was in CVS, according to Bedford Police.

The Waccabuc woman, 52, told police she was inside the Bedford Hills store, at the Bedford Green on Route 117 shopping center, from around 5:10 p.m. to 5:25 p.m., and when got back into her car, she realized the iPad was gone.

"Most of the larcenies we have are from unlocked cars," said Bedford Police Lt. Jeff Dickan, who said police are investigating the incident.

He added, “Most of our daytime vehicle larcenies are either shopping centers or secluded areas where people walk their dog or go out jogging, and people leave their things in their car because they don’t want to lose them."

Dickan said that police encourage people to lock their cars, and tell people that if they absolutely need to leave something there, they should hide it so it is not visible.

A Bedford man was charged with third-degree assault with the intent of physical injury, a misdemeanor, on July 19, Bedford Police said.

The charge stems from a May 18 altercation between two neighbors on Old Post Road, when one accused the other, Allan Richard Conklin, 35, of looking at his mail, police said.

The argument turned into a shoving match, and Conklin is accused of knocking the neighbor down and punching him in the face multiple times, according to police. The victim reported that he suffered bruising, swelling and a cut to his left eye, as well as an injury to his arm, police said.

The victim's original report was made on June 23, more than a month after the incident, so the next month was spent locating and interviewing witnesses of the incident.

Conklin was charged at his home at 1294 Old Post Road on July 19, police said. He was released on his own recognizance and ordered to return to Bedford Town Court on August 1.
