The smell began in the early afternoon and worsened during the day, police said. The hazmat team was called after 5:30 p.m.

The smell could be a possible sewer backup and could be releasing noxious gases, police said.

The Bedford Police Department is forwarding its 911 calls to the Mount Kisco police, which is handling dispatch. Bedford police emphasized that public safety is not affected by the incident.

The Bedford Hills Fire Department is also on the scene.
