In a ceremony Thursday at the Bedford Town House, Town Supervisor Lee Roberts swore in Officers Vincent Gruppuso, Michael Callahan and Richard Hubert to their new positions.

The promotions were made to fill vacancies created by six retirements from the department at the end of 2012, police said. The retirees are Lt. Robert Mazurak, who had served 30 years, Sgt. Jack Purdy (25 years), Sgt. Matthew Dunn (24 years), Sgt. Anthony Frasca (21 years), Detective Matthew DiBiase (23 years), and Officer Patrick Lenahan (24 years).

Gruppuso came to the Bedford Police Department from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office in 2000 and has worked as a uniformed patrol officer, field training officer, Police Academy instructor and firearms program instructor.

Gruppuso is also the program coordinator for the Bedford Police Department's Community Emergency Response Team and is a certified emergency medical technician. His training and education also include certifications as a crime prevention officer and police mountain bike operator. He currently is continuing his education at Empire State College.

In January 2002, Callahan transferred to the Bedford Police Department from the New York City Police Department. In addition to working as a uniformed patrol officer, Callahan is responsible for coordinating the inspection and licensing of all taxicabs in town.

Callahan, who holds a degree in criminal justice from Iona College, is also a certified EMT. He received a unit citation in 2004 as well as the monthly Compstat Award in 2012.

Hubert began his career with the Bedford Police Department in 1994. He has primarily been assigned to the department's patrol bureau and is a member of Bedford's accident investigation team. Like Grupposo and Callahan, Hubert is also an emergency medical technician. He attended Elmira College and SUNY Plattsburgh.

Police Chief William Hayes said the department will continue its interviews of candidates for current and expected vacancies. Hayes said he expects the hiring process to be completed after the first quarter of the year.
