The law enforcement agencies in Counter Terrorism Zone 3 (CTZ-3), which includes Bedford, will continue its Operation Safeguard, a program started in 2004 that reminds residents that the threat of terrorism is ongoing— even, and sometimes especially, during holidays.
“During the upcoming Memorial Day Observance period, we need to remember the recent events that occurred during the Boston Marathon, unfortunately a sad reminder, that we still need to remain vigilant and diligent in our duties, never forgetting, that terrorism is a part of today’s world,” Bedford Police said in a statement sent out to residents.
This weekend, agencies in CTZ-3 will be conducting periodic checks of train stations, commuter parking lots, bus routes, shopping malls, public parks and locations where holiday events may be held. This “Holiday Tasking” will begin on Friday, May 24th and end on early morning of Tuesday, May 28th.
Bedford Police said the public might notice more police officers on patrol during the upcoming holidays and that the increase in uniform presence “is not because there is a renewed threat to your safety,” but simply, “part of our counter-terrorism strategy of continued vigilance.”
Police are asking residents who are celebrating the holidays to be mindful of behavior that does not match the usual pattern of activity, and that, “If you see something, say something.”
Police additionally reminded the public how to respond to suspicious activity:
- Do not confront the individual.
- Do not reveal your suspicions to the individual.
- Do record as many details as possible.
- Do notify local police agencies by calling 911 or their direct number.
