There are two commissioner openings on the ballot this year. Members of the Board of Fire Commissioners are elected by the voting residents of the Bedford Hills fire district. Each of Bedford's three hamlets makes up its own fire district with the authority to tax property owners within the district and each will be holding commissioner elections Tuesday.

Susan A. R. Welch, current Bedford Hills Fire Commission vice chairman, is wrapping up her term and running for one of the commissioner positions opening up: a five-year term starting Jan. 1, 2013 and expiring Dec. 31, 2017.

Bedford Hills resident Michael Ferguson is running to fill the second commissioner spot, which is currently vacant. The one-year position expires Dec. 31, 2013.

The Bedford Hills Board of Fire Commissioners has  exclusive management and control of the property of the district and can adopt rules and regulations governing the Fire Department, prescribe the duties of the members, and enforce discipline. The board also approves new members of the department and develops the annual budget, which is collected as a component of the town property tax levy.

Current officeholders are Santo Curro, chairman; vice chairman Welch and Commissioners David F. Brown and David Liburdi.

To participate in Tuesday's election, voters must be registered on the list provided by County Board of Elections as a resident of the Bedford Hills Fire district.
