The unidentified village resident called authorities on Friday, Aug. 12, to report that had received a call from someone claiming that a female relative of his had been arrested for driving while intoxicated and needed bail money.

This is known as the “grandparents scam” because con artists typically get senior citizens to send or wire money using the “distressed loved one” tactic.

Consumer groups advise victims of the scam to file a complaint with their local police department and the Federal Trade Commission.

On a more uplifting note, police were able to return a lost wallet to its owner.

An employee of a cleaning company found the wallet while working at an office building on South Bedford Road. She bought it to police headquarters on Green Street on Wednesday, Aug. 10, authorities said.

The wallet contained $1,000 in cash, credit cards and personal papers.

Police were able to locate its owner and return the wallet.
