911 Call Led To Arrest Of Paul Simon, Wife Edie Brickell In New Canaan

NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- Pop legend Paul Simon, 72, and his wife, hit musician Edie Brickell, 47, are facing troubled waters after they were each charged with disorderly conduct after a dispute between the couple at their New Canaan home Saturday evening.

New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said police were notified of a problem by a 911 call at 8:20 p.m. Saturday.

“It was a 911 call that was a hang-up call and that is how we were made aware,” he said.

The couple made a brief court appearance Monday at Norwalk Superior Court. As the couple left the court, Simon said they had an argument but that it has been resolved.

“We’re fine. We love each other,” he said as cameras clicked away, according to the Hartford Courant. “We’re fine, we had an argument and it is over.”

When police arrived Saturday evening, the dispute had already calmed down, Krolikowski said, although both parties had minor injuries.

“It had quieted down, which is very common,” Krolikowski said about similar domestic dispute calls. “Generally something will happen, an incident like this, and we will get called to the scene and then it is usually calmed down by the time we arrive. Then we investigate and determine what is appropriate and what had occurred.”

He declined to detail the minor injuries. He also declined to identify who had made the 911 call that was cut off.

The call Saturday was part of a troubling rise in family dispute calls this year in New Canaan, Krolikowski said.

“We have seen a significant increase in family disputes, which aren’t always domestic violence,” he said. So far this year, the New Canaan Police Department has handled 32 of those calls, compared with 19 during the similar time period last year.

“It is concerning. Domestic violence is our violent crime in New Canaan. We don’t have a lot of street crime, we don’t have a lot of crime overall at all most of it is property crime. When we do see violence more often than not it’s against family members it is against spouses it is against domestic partners. It’s not street crime stuff. It is concerning for sure.”

Simon is half of the legendary duo of Simon and Garfunkel that, starting in the 1960s, had hits including "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Mrs. Robinson," "The Sound of Silence" and "Scarborough Fair."

His solo career after breaking up with Garfunkel was equally legendary with hits such as “Still Crazy After All These Years” and “Graceland.”

Brickell only hit single "What I Am," in 1988 came while she fronted the group Edie Brickell & New Bohemians. The couple has also recorded together during their 22-year marriage. They have three children and have lived in New Canaan since 2002.
