I write this letter in response to The Daily Voice article "Bedford Officials Back Cameras At Railroad Crossings," which appeared on July 29. It reports that Sen. Terrence Murphy recently held a press event in Katonah. Sen. Murphy does not represent any part of the town of Bedford, which includes Katonah.
I found it bizarre that he would hold this event out of his district, when our own senator, George Latimer, was neither invited nor informed. Sen. Latimer supported the same bill that Murphy was touting outside of his own district. In fact, the proposed legislation passed the Senate 63-0, a bipartisan effort, to say the least!
It seems that protocol and common courtesy would have included the local and state leaders that represent Bedford: Sen. Latimer, Assemblyman David Buchwald and Bedford Town Supervisor Chris Burdick. I understand that neither Sen. Latimer nor Assemblyman Buchwald were invited to this event. That's troubling. I don't know if Supervisor Burdick was invited, but one would think this would be coordinated with the local officials by Murphy, who spearheaded the event.
Francis Corcoran, while a member of the MTA Advisory Council as well as a Bedford councilman, should understand protocol as well as anyone -- did he communicate with Supervisor Burdick?
Don Scott, who lost the supervisor's race last time to Mr. Burdick, was not representing Bedford in any official capacity, as far as I know. This incident smacks of the kind of grandstanding Sen. Murphy's predecessor, Greg Ball, would regularly orchestrate. The optics are just plain bad.
Sen. Murphy owes an apology to Sen. Latimer and the other officials who represent Bedford. Maybe next time, he should hold the event in his own town, or at least in a town he represents.
